For a while, Sandy Koufax was the best pitcher in baseball. Some have used that period of dominance to suggest that Koufax was the best ever, which he was not. Nevertheless, pitching in the low-offense 1960s in the great pitchers' park that was Chavez Ravine, Koufax was awfully intimidating. He was a pure power pitcher who found his control and took off with the perfect conditions. He won 25 games in 1963, then 26 in 1965 and 27 in 1966 before retiring with crippling arthritis. Retiring at the top of his game only added to his legend.
A perfect storm of conditions helped make him what he was, but three Cy Youngs attest to his greatness. His 4-3 World Series record is balanced by a 0.95 ERA.
Koufax earned 150.51 ratings points.
