The last National Leaguer to hit .400 in a season took a long time to break into the lineup. The Giants had a fine player already at first base, one George Kelly. He didn't get into the lineup regularly until age 28. Once he did, he started hitting like crazy. In 1930, he hit .401. It was something of an accident of history, as that was the high-water mark for batting average, but Terry did it in any case.
That season was his only batting title but he finished third in the MVP voting twice and was in the top ten six times, though he was only an everyday player for ten seasons. He was also an excellent defensive player.
Terry earned 154.05 ratings points.
Terry's stats: .341 average, 2193 hits, 373 doubles, 112 triples. posted by Shawn Weaver at 11:52 AM
