He was a native of Cambridge, Massachusetts who got his major league start with the Troy Haymakers in 1880 and spent most of his career pitching in New York. Keefe was one of the longest-lasting pitchers of the 19th century, and in his 14 seasons he won an astounding 342 games. He won 40 in a season twice, and 30 or more four other times. Keefe led the NL in wins twice and in ERA three times. He would have won the 1888 Cy Young Award, if there had been such a thing then. Some sources credit him as the inventor of the change-up.
